History of Morse Code
๐ Origins
Morse code was developed in the 1830s by Samuel Morse and his assistant Alfred Vail. It revolutionized long-distance communication before the telephone was invented.
๐ก The Telegraph Era
The first Morse code message "What hath God wrought" was sent in 1844 from Washington D.C. to Baltimore. This marked the beginning of electrical telecommunications.
โ๏ธ Aviation Legacy
Morse code remained essential in aviation and maritime navigation well into the 20th century. Vessels were required to carry radio operators trained in Morse code.
๐๏ธ Military Significance
During World War II, Morse code was used extensively for secret military communications. Its simplicity made it difficult to intercept and decode.
Common Morse Code Signals
SOS
The most famous distress signal. Not an abbreviation - just easy to remember and transmit. Used from 1912 until 1999.
CQ - Seek You
A general call to any station. Used to broadcast to all listening stations rather than a specific recipient.
73 - Best Regards
Ham radio operators use this to send warm greetings and best wishes. One of the most recognized amateur radio signals.
88 - Love and Kisses
Another ham radio expression, used between operators who are friends or have a romantic connection.
